Artist’s Statement

2020

Connections with people, the natural world, and the past are all important to me and are subjects of my artwork. Most of my work has been done as representational drawings, paintings and 3-D creations. Lately I have studied abstract painting as a way to learn more about basic art principles.

Portraiture seems to be my strongest expression of connection. Acrylics is the medium that I am using at present. However, I see advantages in going back to oils as I develop a looser, more expressive way to paint. In a portrait I want to express the nature of the person more than an exact likeness.

When I teach, I want my students to feel that doing art, in this case painting, enables them to see more and differently. I want this broadening of their experience to enhances their lives as they learn to express themselves in new ways.
