  • About me

All things literary have infatuated me for as long as I can remember. It was never the fiction or imagination that intrigued me, but the structure of language instead. It was intriguing to know that each sentence we choose to string together affects our relationship with another being. I come from a divorced home, and found language to be the deciding factor of the mood when I existed in both households. Tiptoeing around words with my family was and still remains one of my specialties. This constant apprehensive feeling is why I have never felt completely comfortable or safe in any home.My work is a nonlinear narrative of the emotional changes I have gone through in the past two years. I am photographing in my own home where I am beginning to feel comfortable, and making cathartic work that is helping me resolve some of the struggles within myself. The reason I do not feel completely comfortable in my home now is because I still share it with a roommate and because I will be leaving it soon. I have yet to figure out if I will always feel a detachment to any home, or if I will eventually find a place that feels secure. The photographs I make are broken down into their raw, most basic form with the use of a nude model. The constructions are manipulated and the color palette is controlled to symbolize the control I have attempted to seize in my life. Themes of confinement, loneliness, ritual, growth, decay, and struggle are found in the work to represent how difficult it is to find a sense of belonging in a space. The themes are portrayed in a delicate, microcosmic way to reinforce the subtlety of my emotions and relate to the viewer. It is important to me that my audience connect to this self-portrait series in one way or another. As human beings, we all share similar physical, psychological, and emotional struggles, and I think there is meaning in discovering that common thread.
